A little further up the coast Kealakekua Bay (sometimes referred to as James Cook Bay); a Marine Life Conservation District and an important historic location as well, marking the death of Captain James Cook in 1779. Today, a white obelisk on the shore stands as a memorial, overlooking brilliant waters, filled with beautiful coral and schools of brightly colored tropical fish. The protected bay is perfect for snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking. Catamaran sailing tours to this idyllic spot ensure fun for kids of all ages with boogie boards, SNUBA, underwater video of your day and even a water slide!
Pawai Bay is also a protected Marine Preserve, offering crystal clear waters and plenty of area to explore. Snorkel or dive the caves, caverns, arches and the prolific coral reef that is home to large schools of fish, moray eels, turtles, and the occasional Spinner Dolphin. Most people reach this secluded spot by joining a snorkel; the folks at Body Glove offer daily tours, along with Humpback whale watches during the winter and early spring.
Kayaking is a great alternative to the larger boats. Spend a day under the sunny skies of the Kohala Coast and paddle Puako Bay’s many coves and tide pools. There are also daily departures from Keauhou Bay that explore the sea caves, lava tubes and cliffs of the Kona Coast; both are great for snorkeling
